In a collaboration between the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and a university, inmates at the city district jail in Iriga City, Camarines Sur have been given the opportunity to pursue college education while incarcerated.

A memorandum of agreement was signed between BJMP and a university to facilitate this college education program for interested Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL).

“Hindi lang siya exactly on education, there will also [be] services on livelihood and other activities para mababago yung ating mga kapatid sa loob mismo ng bilangguan,” Dr. Amado Oliva Jr., President of the university, said.

Interested PDLs will go through an admission exam and other requirements.

Upon completion of their studies, graduates will receive diplomas, providing them with opportunities for a better future once they are released.

“Dito po natin nakikita na kahit nandito po sila sa loob ng bilangguan o facility ng BJMP, tuloy-tuloy parin po ang pag-aaral nila,” JCINSP Freddie Caballero II, the Jail Warden, said.
