A total of 50 fishermen participated in separate races in La Union and Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
In La Union, 22 fishermen competed in the ‘Bangka-thon’ as part of the celebration of ‘Bulan ti Mannalon ken Mangngalap.’
The fishermen used paddles to reach the finish line.
The activity aimed to recognize the vital role of fishermen in the aquaculture industry and promote boat paddling as a water sport in La Union.
In Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, fishermen and boat operators also raced in a ‘Bangka-thon’ and Takuli Race in Padson River near Barangay 34-B Gabu Norte.
More than 20 motorized boats raced while nine non-motorized boats competed in the Takuli Race.
The race was part of the 2024 Agriculture & Fishery Sector Day celebration in the city, with cash prizes awarded to the winners.
“Dati half day event lang siya, pero ngayon two years na, [it has been] in honor sa ating mga mangingisda,” Engr. Sheila Marie Opelac, Laoag City Agriculturist, said.
