A calf born with six legs surprised residents of Barangay Payas in Santa Barbara, Pangasinan.
Emma Gutana, the owner of the calf, said they did not expect the outcome because the pregnancy of the mother cow was reportedly normal.
“Noong May 13, nagulat na lang kami dahil ‘yung baka anim ang paa. First [time] lang na ganito. Lahat ng tao nagulat, dahil ganyan ang nangyari,” Gutana said.
The Gutana family believes that the cow will bring luck. In fact, several people have reportedly expressed interest in buying the cow.
“Kung may bibili, ibebenta. Kung wala, aalagaan na lang namin dahil swerte daw ‘yan,” Gutana said.
According to the Provincial Veterinary Office, the condition of the calf may be polymelia, a type of congenital defect.
It could also be a case of inbreeding, where the calf's parents are related closely.
“Kapag nagkaroon ng inbreeding, halimbawa, ang nag-mate sa kanya na lalaki ay mayroong siyang relationship by blood sa ina, magkakaroon ng abnormalities,” Dr. Marissa De Vera, Veterinarian III from the Pangasinan Provincial Veterinary Office, said.
Authorities said calves with abnormalities have a shorter lifespan compared to normal ones, around 15 years usually, depending on the care they receive.
