An impressive showing by schools in the regions dominate the May 2024 Chemical Engineering Licensure Examination as 7 of its 10 top-performing institutions hail from outside the National Capital Regional, while a UPLB graduate claims solo top rank – according to the official results released by the Professional Regulation Commission on Monday, May 27.

TOP-PERFORMING SCHOOLS

Top-ranking the chemical engineering exams are the De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila and the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman, both achieving a 100% passing rate. The former saw all of its 11 takers overcome the exam, while the latter had 28 out of 28.

Coming in a close second is Cagayan State University in Tuguegarao, who had all but two of its 27 takers successfully pass the licensure exam, good for a 92.60% passing rate.

Iloilo City-based UP Visayas ranked third with a 92% passing percentage (23 out of 25).

UPLB, meanwhile, had 22 successful passers out of 26 total takers, achieving an 84.62% rate to rank fifth overall.

Mapua Malayan Colleges-Laguna, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institue of Technology (MSU-IIT), Central Philippine University in Iloilo City, and Mapua Colleges-Mindanao also made the list.

TOP-PERFORMING INDIVIDUALS

Miguel Bungalon, a graduate from the University of the Philippines Los Baños emerged atop as the lone topnotcher of the May 2024 exams for chemical engineers, scoring an impressive 87.30% rating.

He is followed by Mapua University’s Patrick Jay Garcia, who scored 85.90; while UP Diliman’s Andrei Abiog (85.50) ranked third overall.

Coincidentally, Micah Haboc and Michelle Airah Pablo, both DLSU alumni, had an identical score of 85.10, tying at the fourth spot. 

Rounding out the top five is another UPD graduate in Jan Czedrick Mendoza who garnered an 84.90% rating. 

Other aspirants hailing from the regions who made the top ten list are fifth-ranked Janice Guillermo (Mariano Marcos State University - Batac) and Jhilsean Brix Olmedo (Eastern Visayas State University - Tacloban), seventh placer Althea May Benjamin (Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod), eighth-ranked Joshua Antony Cruz (UP Visayas-Iloilo City), and tenth-ranked Shaun Patrick Albao (Eastern Visayas State University-Tacloban). 

According to PRC, 640 out of 928 total examinees successfully passed the licensure examination, making for a 68.97% national passing rate. This was a slight decrease from the previous board exams for chemical engineers held last October 2023, where 70.23% overcame the test.

The board exams for chemical engineers were conducted on May 21 to 23, 2024, at testing centers located in NCR, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, Lucena, and Rosales.
