Carlos Yulo’s remarkable achievement of winning two gold medals in men’s gymnastics at the 2024 Paris Olympics has brought immense pride to his father, relatives, and the nation.

Yulo bagged gold in the men’s gymnastics floor exercise and vault apparatus finals. 

Yulo, a 24-year-old athlete from Malate, Manila, has Pangasinense roots. His mother was born in Barangay Aliaga, Malasiqui, Pangasinan. He is the second of four siblings. 

According to his father, Mark Andrew Yulo, his son’s extensive participation in various international competitions played a significant role in his success.

“Masipag na bata ‘yan si Caloy, galing sa hirap. ‘Yung unang Olympic niya na natalo sa Tokyo, Japan ang nag-motivate sa kanya para makakuha ng medals sa 2024 Olympics,” Mark said.

In Malasiqui, Pangasinan, Yulo’s relatives are celebrating his historic Olympic victory. They have witnessed his dedication and effort in pursuing his chosen sport.

“Talagang proud na proud kami noon pa sa batang ‘yan. Talagang mahusay siya, talagang pinag-praktisan niya talaga. Nagpunta pa ‘yan ng japan para mag-practice,” Alicia Poquiz-Ventenilla, a relative of Yulo, said.

“Ang galing-galing talaga ng pamangkin namin. sana caloy, alam ko nagampanan mo na ang hinahangad mo magmula noong bata ka,” Marlyn Poquiz, another relative, added.

Yulo is the first Filipino gymnast to reach the podium in any Summer Games and the first male athlete from the Philippines to win a gold medal.

Yulo expressed his gratitude to his fellow Filipinos for their unwavering support.

“Gusto ko magpasalamat sa pagpupuyat niyo, [at] sa pag-take ng time na ipagdasal at panoorin ako, then subaybayan. Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat,” Yulo said.
