Residents of Ilocos Norte marked the 118th birth anniversary of their local hero, former Governor Roque Ablan Sr., with a day of remembrance and honor for his bravery during World War II.

The celebration included a wreath-laying ceremony at Ablan's monument, followed by a 21-gun salute in his honor.

He served as a guerrilla leader and war hero during World War II, leading a successful resistance against Japanese forces in 1942.

Ablan was not only a war hero but also the youngest governor elected in his time, assuming office at the age of 32.

His legacy as a leader and patriot continues to inspire the people of Ilocos Norte.

In recognition of his contributions, the provincial government declared the day a non-working holiday in Ilocos Norte, allowing residents to participate in the commemorative activities.

“Sometimes, the celebration of Governor Roque Ablan Sr. gives us time to pause and reflect, and remember what we are celebrating," Assistant Secretary Michael Kristian Ablan of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said.

“The event in the first place, in the case of Governor Roque Ablan Sr., we celebrate [it] because [we] have to recognize all of our heroes," he added.
