Handmade rattan crafts created by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in Brooke’s Point are now on display at the Baragatan Festival 2025 in Palawan.

The BJMP Brooke’s Point District Jail joined this year’s festival through the LGU Brooke’s Point Trade Fair Booth at the Provincial Capitol Grounds. It aims to showcase PDL-made accessories and woven products as part of their rehabilitation efforts.

“These platforms allow PDLs to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities, reinforcing the agency's commitment to restorative justice and community-based reintegration programs,” Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo, BJMP MIMAROPA Information Officer said.

The Baragatan Festival, celebrated from June 17 to 23 each year, marks the founding of Palawan's civil government.

“Baragatan” comes from the Cuyunon word meaning “to meet,” and the event gathers communities for a week of cultural shows, street dancing, float parades, and trade exhibitions.

One of its key attractions is the Barakalan sa Baragatan, an agro-trade fair that features local products from towns and cities across the province.

The BJMP product exhibit runs from June 6 to 22 and is hosted by the LGU Tourism Office. It invites the public to support local products while contributing to the rehabilitation of the PDLs behind them.

Anglo believes that when visitors by these items, they not only take home handcrafted goods but also help give the artisans a fresh start and a chance to rebuilt their lives.
