A celebration where revelers get wet normally, where there is no room for ill feelings against other participants, where poor sports do not have a place - this is the water festival associated with the feast in honor of Saint John the Baptist.
One of barangays in Iloilo City that mark the water festival is San Juan in Molo District. From the barangay hall to residents living in the interior portion of the barangay, everyone gets wet as the community engages in playful splashing of water at each other.
To avoid splashing water at individuals reporting for work and school on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, a road closure was imposed on the main street of the barangay. However, there were plenty who passed through the area designated for the water festival who had to bear the inevitability of getting wet.
“Bangga Baluarte to boundary ng Calumpang and San juan, para iwas na lang na masabuyan ang mga nagtatrabaho na sakay ng jeep,” according to Jonie Enojado, barangay kagawad of San Juan, Molo.
Aside from the water-splashing activity, residents joined the religious fluvial procession, and celebrated the Holy Mass.
Organizers made sure to emphasize the religious aspect of the celebration - the feast being a form of thanksgiving for the blessings ang guidance of their patron saint.
Meanwhile, aside from the traditional splashing of water along the road, the celebration in Barangay Punta Taytay in Bacolod City took on a level higher via a foam party participated by visitors and residents.
The traditional serving of unlimited supply of “sisi” (small oysters) for visitors symbolizes the residents’ gratitude for an abundant sea catch.
“May mukbang na, sobrang saya dahil may foam party pa. Masaya talaga dito,” a resident named “Ligaya” said.
