A woman due to deliver her baby gave birth successfully on her way to the hospital.
The woman delivered her baby boy while on board an ambulance on her way to a medical facility with the help of a newbie government worker.
A new employee of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Makato in the Province of Aklan attended to the woman.
The new contractual employee of MDRRMO Makato earned praises after the mother had a safe delivery inside the ambulance on an emergency situation.
Fhemie Jadine Sagarang, 22 years old, a resident of Barangay Dumga, Makato started reporting for work early in July 2025. She responded to a call for help at about 6 p.m. on July 19, 2025, in Barangay Castillo, on a woman due to give birth.
However, the team has to walk up the woman's house first to assist the patient to the ambulance, and while in the ambulance, in transit to Kalibo - the capital town of Aklan - the baby pushed its head out which prompted Sagarang to assist in the delivery.
The mother delivered a "healthy baby boy" that Sagarang placed on the mom’s chest immediately, as this is the normal procedure. The skin-to-skin contact of the newborn and his mom, according to baby health experts, helps regulate the baby's temperature, breathing, and heart rate.
Placing the baby on the mother's chest is also seen to enable the infant hear the comforting sound of his mother’s heartbeat and voice.
After the delivery, the transport of the patient to the hospital was pursued to ensure the health, safety, and sanitation of both mother and child.
Sagarang is aware that the next step would be to seek omphalotomy, or the medical procedure that involves the incision of the baby's umbilical cord.
The mother expressed big thanks to Sagarang, the driver of the ambulance, and another ambulance assistant.
Makato Mayor Leoncito Mationg lauded the three personnel for their prompt response, for a job well done, surpassing what is expected of them. The three were given incentives worth P5,000 each.
Moreover, it was the first time Sagarang assisted in the delivery of a baby. Taking off from the experience, she considers pursuing midwifery.
Currently, Sagarang is taking up a three-year vocational course at the Saint Gabriel Medical Center.
