Christmas has arrived in the Philippines’ “Christmas Capital” as colorful lanterns lit up the streets of San Fernando, Pampanga during the opening of “Paskung Fernandino” evening on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
More than 17 locations across the city glowed at the same time with the lighting of handcrafted parols, each design symbolizing faith, love, and hope.
City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan said the city aims to bring joy and pride to Fernandinos and visitors through the annual celebration.
“Gusto natin magbigay ng kasiyahan dito sa mga kababayan natin sa San Fernando at lahat ng mga dumadaan at pumupunta sa siyudad natin kasi nga isa tayo sa itinanghal na one of the best places to go during Christmas... Kaya dapat every year maganda ‘yung Christmas lanterns natin bilang suporta sa ating San Fernando lantern-making industry at bilang promotions na din sa Giant Lantern Festival,” Pangilinan said.
From the City Hall and Heroes Hall to the rotondas and welcome arches, the lights illuminated the city under this year’s theme, “Parul Fernandino, Parul ning Pamabayu” or “Lantern of Hope.”
The opening coincided with the city’s 117th Giant Lantern Festival and its nomination for the World Travel Awards, further cementing San Fernando’s title as the home of giant lanterns.
In the city where parols have long been a symbol of light amid darkness, Fernandinos continue to prove that Christmas in San Fernando is unlike any other.
