A well-known puto maker from Calasiao brought a new twist to the traditional rice cake this Undas with his latest creation, the “Black Puto.”

For more than four decades, Rudy dela Cruz has been crafting the town’s famous delicacy, earning him the title of “legendary puto maker.”

This 2025, he surprised customers with a special variant made to fit the occasion.

“Pumasok lang sa isip namin. Dahil pista ng patay, nag-try kami na gumawa, napakasarap!” Dela Cruz, president of the Calasiao Puto Producers and Vendors Association, said.

According to him, the black puto has a secret ingredient that sets it apart from other flavored variants. Its supply, however, is limited.

After the Undas season, it will only be available through pre-orders.

Crowds flocked to Dela Cruz’s stall early Thursday, October 30, 2025, to buy the new product and other rice cake varieties.

Among the early buyers was Carlito Corpuz, who stopped by before heading to Baguio to buy pasalubong for his coworkers.

After trying it for the first time, Corpuz said it has a different taste that he can't describe.

“Ibang flavor, eh. Hindi ko masabi kung anong klase, pero masarap!” he said.

Each kilo of black puto sells for P160, while the classic plain puto and kutsinta are priced at P120 per kilo. Flavored puto with cheese costs P140 per kilo.
