A Chinese sparrowhawk was rescued after getting caught in a net in Barangay Cabatacan West, Lasam, Cagayan.

A resident first spotted the bird, a migratory species from China, which can also be found in parts of Siberia, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. The species migrates to the Philippines to escape extreme cold weather.

Environmental group Biodiversity Watch, composed of advocates and volunteers for wildlife protection, reminded the public to use nets and traps responsibly to avoid harming wildlife.

“Nanawagan ako sa mga may-ari ng lambat ‘to na kung maaari tanggalin na ninyo. Kasi mga endangered species ang nakukuha, ‘yung mga malapit nang maubos na ibon.” Dennis Pungtilan Manuel, a resident, said.

After being rescued, the sparrowhawk was released back into the forest safely, with no injuries reported.
