A couple in Mangaldan, Pangasinan chose honesty over personal gain when they turned over an envelope containing ₱50,000 and important documents they found on the road.

Arnold Veloria said he and his wife were on their way to the market in Barangay Gueguesangen when something shiny on the pavement caught his eye.

“May kasunod po ako tapos parang kuminang po ‘yung plastic kaya pinulot ko at binigay sa asawa ko kung anong laman. Ang sabi po, pera. Kaya sabi ko, sige mamaya balik na lang natin,” he said.

Inside the brown envelope were identification papers and other personal documents, along with the cash. Veloria said it never crossed his mind to keep the money.

“Makokonsensya ka rin pag ginamit mo sa ano, eh. Kikitain naman ‘yan eh,” he added.

The couple immediately went to the Mangaldan local government office to surrender the envelope. According to the Municipal Public Information Office, they contacted the person named in the documents quickly.

The owner expressed deep gratitude to the couple for safeguarding the money.

“This is just one proof na buhay pa talaga siya, ‘yung ating integridad, katapatan dito sa ating lipunan,” Public Information Officer Janice Guarin said.

The couple’s act of honesty has drawn praise from the community.
