Bright lanterns and deep faith filled the streets of Magalang, Pampanga through the annual “Lubenas ning Pasku,” a tradition that blends devotion, artistry, and community unity.
A total of 26 barangays joined the grand opening procession, parading colorful and intricately designed lanterns made by each barangay. The event carried the theme “Ing Banal a Bituin ning Magalang: The Holy Star of Magalang,” marking the start of the Christmas novena, Simbang Gabi, and Misa de Gallo for Magaleños.
Mayor Malu Lacson said the local government supports the tradition to keep community participation strong and faith-centered.
“Every year may subsidy tayong binibigay sa barangay to start yung pambiki nila ng materials…. Community participation… and motivation to excel in this Lubenas is what makes it sustainable and lasting. It’s very important kasi we need to bring back the people closer to their faith, alam naman natin ngayon ang challenges sa society natin,” Lacson said.
Each lantern in the procession carried religious meaning. A cross-shaped lantern symbolized Jesus Christ, followed by lanterns with twelve stars representing the apostles, and fish-shaped lanterns symbolizing Christ and his followers.
Beyond its spiritual significance, the Lubenas also served as a friendly competition among barangays, highlighting their craftsmanship and creativity in lantern-making. After the opening procession, the lanterns will tour their respective barangays for nine days, inviting residents to attend Simbang Gabi and Misa de Gallo.
Residents said the tradition strengthens faith and unity within the community.
“’Yun na yung nagiging tradisyon ng mga Catholic at pagkakaisa ng mga Katoliko,” Ligaya Dayrit, a resident, said.
“Magaganda, pinaghahandaan talaga nila ‘yan. I’m proud to be Magalenian,” Eden Tuyan, another resident, added
For the people of Magalang, Lubenas ning Pasku stands as a living expression of strong faith and lasting community unity during the holiday season.
