The evergreen tale of Joseph and Mary goes inside the blender with interesting nuances of Filipino heritage and culture, making for a fresh take on the moving biblical story of hope told through the sarsuwela entitled Panunuluyan: A Musical Journey of Faith and Giving.

The stirring musical – a landmark production and the first musical theater work by the Board of Trustees of the Veterans of World War II (BTVWWII) – is set to arrive tomorrow, December 19, at the Philippine Veterans Museum MALT (Museum, Archives, Library, and Theater) in Western Bicutan, Taguig City, with two shows scheduled for 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.

Panunuluyan explores the faithful journey of Joseph and Mary as they set out for Bethlehem from Nazareth, but has its storyline embedded with historical themes of nation-building and service, and the “enduring challenges faced by Filipino veterans.”

In a press release, the producers further describe the upcoming sarsuwela to be “rooted in tradition,” reflecting themes of “faith, hospitality, and hope.” It also aims to remind the audiences that “Filipino cultural practices, like the stories of our veterans, must be preserved and passed on.”

Produced in partnership with Takipsilim Community Theater, Panunuluyan is written and directed by Aliw Awards Best Director for a Musical nominee Meldrig Costuna, with award-winning composer Eugene Belbis helming its musical direction.

It stars Carlo Fabillar as Joseph, and Stacy Maxilom as Mary, joined by a promising group of up and coming actors and performers in its dynamic cast.

This tale for the faithful and the theatrical show admirers promises to be family-friendly, inspirational, and close to home where “the past and present meet on stage to inspire future generations.”
