Devotees of the Señor Santo Niño in Northern Cebu who were hit by the deadly magnitude 6.9 earthquake and Typhoon Tino fulfilled their vow to take part in the 461st Fiesta Señor celebration.
The magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck late night on September 30, 2025, while Typhoon Tino unleashed its fury in Cebu on November 4, 2025. The two disasters, a little over a month apart, did not dampen the faith of the devotees in the Señor Santo Niño.
Candelaria Aton, from Bogo City, the epicenter of the quake, shivers at the thought of the experience. But, she said, her faith is more powerful than the earthquake.
Another quake survivor, Agnestina Yuso, said she vows to light candles at the Basilica del Santo Niño de Cebu as her way of thanking for getting a new lease on life.
Analee Matisado, another devotee, said that her three-year-old grandchild’s arm was pinned in the wreck of their house during the quake. The child was pulled from the rubble and rushed to the hospital. Despite a broken arm, the child survives.
The child’s survival is a miracle manifested by the Señor Santo Niño, Matisado said.
To be able to earn money while waiting for the Feast Day, or the 461st Fiesta Señor on Sunday, January 18, they brought products to sell such as candles and straw hats.
The devotees said they will use their income to pay for their ride back home to Northern Cebu. They have not yet recovered fully from the calamities, they said, and think that they might not live again as normally as they used to. Yet they continue to hope for better days anchored on the ever-living God in the image of the Holy Child.
