Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) at the Mamburao District Jail took part in a skills enhancement activity focused on baking traditional Filipino bibingka, as part of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology’s (BJMP) rehabilitation programs.
The workshop, facilitated by Jail Officers Hazel Urieta and Loraenne Angela Advincula, aimed to provide participants with practical baking skills that could support livelihood opportunities after their release. Officials said the activity also sought to promote discipline, creativity, and self-confidence among PDLs.
During the session, participants learned proper food preparation techniques and the safe use of baking tools while preparing and cooking bibingka.
Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo, spokesperson for BJMP Mimaropa, said the program is intended to help PDLs rebuild their confidence and prepare for reintegration into society.
“Every skill they learn here is more than a lesson — it’s a chance to reclaim their future. We want our PDLs to leave not just with knowledge, but with confidence, hope, and the belief that they can build a better life,” Anglo said.
One participant, identified by the alias Rene, 27, said he is happy to learn the new skill.
“Hindi ko akalain na kaya ko palang mag-bake. Masaya ako na natututo ako ng kapaki-pakinabang na bagay at naipapakita ko rin ito sa iba.”
BJMP Mimaropa said the baking workshop is part of its continuing efforts to provide skills training and personal development programs aimed at supporting rehabilitation and emotional well-being.
