January 2026 became more special for Baguio City after its first-ever cherry blossoms, or sakura, began to bloom, marking a rare event in the Philippines.

The Baguio Country Club shared photos on Saturday showing sakura flowers blooming from one of its trees. The club’s management said they had cared for the tree for more than seven years before it finally bloomed.

Cherry blossoms rarely bloom in the Philippines, making the event unique not only for Baguio City but also for the country. Officials said Baguio’s cold climate likely helped the tree thrive.

The sakura trees were donated by Japanese nationals to the country club in June 2018 and May 2019.
