Rolan Popatco Jr., 22, from Barangay Camias in Porac, Pampanga, becomes the first Aeta in the province to pass the licensure exam for medical technologists.
His achievement marks a milestone for his community and serves as inspiration for other indigenous Filipinos pursuing higher education.
Despite growing up in the mountains, Popatco pursued his studies in the lowlands through scholarships from the provincial government and other agencies.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the College of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Pampanga.
“Masaya ako kasi licensed na ako kasi hindi lang siya para sa akin, hindi lang siya para sa pamilya ko, para sa community ko. Although mahirap maging MedTech po, mahirap ang journey. Mas masakit kaku na nakikita na reng kapwa Aeta ko matatawli la when it comes king kalusugan o health,” Popatco said.
While facing many challenges, he remained determined and balanced his studies with his role as SK chairman in his barangay. He dreams of becoming a doctor to serve his fellow Aetas and provide medical services to his community.
“Two weeks migeview ku pu and at the same time sabi ku enaku sana mag-exam pin. Ali siguru kung sinuku ke ini, sinuku ku ne ing laban ku para makasaup. Ita pu ing inisip ku namu. Pagdating ko dun sa exam, ala ku aliwang inisip kundi kayari na nini sumaup kung maragul, ali mu para kanaku kundi pati kareng kapara kung Aetas,” he added.
According to the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Popatco’s success is the first of its kind in Pampanga. His achievement not only brings pride to his family but also inspires other indigenous youth to strive for higher education and professional careers.
Popatco is currently seeking a scholarship to continue his studies in medicine, aiming to further serve his community.
From the mountains of Porac to passing the licensure exam, Rolan Popatco Jr. continues on with hope, determination, and the power of dreams.
