For over two years, 65-year-old Carlito De Guzman endured the harsh conditions of the noisy streets in Dagupan City—deprived of proper meals, quality sleep, and grappling with foot problems.
Until recently.
A Good Samaritan noticed him and other senior citizens living on the streets and decided to extend a helping hand. Renald Soriano, a university instructor and church servant, opened his home to De Guzman and the other elderly individuals living as vagabonds.
"Siya mismo nakaharap ko, walang pag-aalingan. [Sabi niya] 'kung gusto mo tatay, doon ka [na] tumira sa amin.' Hindi ako nagdalawang-isip," De Guzman said.
Soriano has been on a mission since 2019 to provide care and support to elderly individuals who have been deprived of love and compassion.
He utilizes his income to fulfill the needs of those he has taken in.
"Tinayo namin itong charity na ito for the elderly through the inspiration na ipinakita ni St. Theresa," Soriano said.
This Christmas season, the elderly residents, now living under Soriano's care, expressed their gratitude through warm embraces, accompanied by heartfelt thanks.
Soriano, undeterred by the challenges and hardships, remains committed to his cause, emphasizing the importance of respect and compassion for others every day, not just during the holiday season.
"Hanggat kaya ng katawan ko, hanggat may matatanda na nandiyan sa lansangan na kailangang kupkupin… kukupkupin at mamahalin [ko sila]," he said.
