The local government of Talisay in Camarines Norte has recognized eight high school students for their bravery in saving a 41-year-old man from being swept away by current in the town’s river.

The man, reportedly under the influence of liquor, took a swim while the boys were hanging out since it was a Saturday.

But the river’s strong current almost swept the man away had it not been for the eight boys who risked their lives to save him. One of the boys got hold of the man and the rest helped in pulling him out of the water.

"Kakayanin namin yung ganun na sitwasyon kahit na delikado... Nahirapan pa rin po kami kasi malakas po yung agos ng tubig at malalim po yung tubig," Jonard San Fernando, one of the eight, said.

The man’s family thanked the boys for their selfless act.

"Nagpapasalamat ako toy saindong walo sa pagliligtas sa aki ko, kung dae saindo, eh di sana mayo na [siya]," Gertrudes Fernandez, the victim's mother, said.
