Massive fires hit two communities in Cebu City late evening on Saturday, January 6, 2024.

The first fire erupted at a residential area in in Barangay Carreta while the second fire hit Barangay Basak Pardo.

The fire In Barangay Carreta left 90 families or 400 individuals homeless. It razed at least 60 houses and burned six others partially.

Damage to property is pegged at P4.5 million.

The Cebu City Fire Department, through its spokesperon SFO2 Wendell Villanueva, said the fire started at 9:23 p.m. Third alarm was raised by 9:49 p.m.

The fire was placed under control at 10:30 p.m. and was put out by 10:58 p.m.

The fire in Barangay Basak Pardo started at 11:35 p.m. and second alarm was raised by 12:30 a.m. on January 7, 2024. 

Barangay Chairman Marciano Año said that the fire started at a house made of light materials where one of the renters repaired cellphones for a fee. Año said it is possible that while the tenant was soldering cellphone parts, the electrical wiring sparked.

As the walls of the house were made of woven thin bamboo strips, locally called "amakan," the fire spread immediately to adjacent houses.

Further, the fire in Basak Pardo started at the house of one Viviano "Biano" Neja reportedly because also of an electrical wiring that sparked but on yet undetermined cause.
