A 51-year-old man in Laoag, Ilocos Norte died after he succumbed to the rabies virus after getting bitten by his pet cat. The cat also died.
The man, Arnel Marcos, was bitten in October 2023 but he reportedly did not avail of anti-rabies vaccine until he started experiencing symptoms of infection.
He passed away on January 5, 2024.
As a preventive measure, individuals who were in contact with Marcos have been placed in isolation and given the anti-rabies vaccine.
The City Veterinary Office identified Marcos’ case as the city's first cat bite incident of 2024.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of immediate steps when bitten or scratched by a cat:
1. Clean the Wound Thoroughly: Wash the wound with clean water and soap. Allow the water to flow over the injury.
2. Apply Antiseptic: Use providone iodine and antibiotic ointment on the wound and cover it with a bandage.
3. Seek Medical Attention: Consult a doctor promptly, especially if the wound is deep or on the head.
Antibiotics or rabies vaccination may be necessary.
