Authorities have tightened security at the Pinsal Falls in Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur after a 20-year-old man died after allegedly jumping off the falls.

Based on investigation, the man, Jay Mark Cuaresma, reportedly attended a birthday party and walked to the falls later. Barangay officials were said to be unaware of the presence of visitors because the falls was already closed to visitors at that time.

"Hindi alam nung mga barangay official na mayroong taong pumunta doon at that time kasi closed na ‘yung Pinsal Falls,” Vendiola added.

Responders found Cuaresma’s body at 8 p.m. or about three hours after he reportedly arrived at the falls.

Arwin Vendiola, Sta. Maria's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer, said Cuaresma sustained fractures, which may be the reason why he was not able to surface after jumping into the water. Cuaresma reportedly knew how to swim.

"Actually, marunong siyang lumangoy pero nung na-retrieve namin siya, according doon sa assessment ng Emergency Medical Dispatcher namin, mayroon siyang fracture sa paa at kamay. Baka hindi na nakaahon dahil hindi na maigalaw ‘yung kamay at paa," Vendiola said.

Bringing of alcoholic beverages to the falls, as well as entering the area beyond allowable hours, are prohibited strictly.

The man’s remains were brought to San Manuel, Pangasinan.
