A 20-year-old man in Polangui, Albay died after he was hit by a train that was traveling to Legazpi City from Naga City.

No one saw how the incident had happened but residents saw the victim later with severe head injuries and a severed leg after the train had passed the area.

The incident happened on January 19, 2024.

The mother of the victim said tshe was unaware of any problem he might have had.

"Di ko po akalaing mangyayari yan sa anak ko kasi mabait man po yan, di naman po siya lumalabas, bakit po ganyan ang nangyari sa kanya," Enelita Portem, the mother of the victim, said.

The Philippine National Railways (PNR) has assured that they are open to an investigation and will provide support to the victim's family.

Local authorities call for increased vigilance in areas where train tracks traverse communities.

"So panawagan natin sa lahat ng mga barangay or municipalities na dinadaanan ng tren kung pwede sana na matulungan kami, lalo sa mga ganitong pagkakataon na meron sanang mga [bantay]... lalo yung mga crossing meron sana ding barangay visibility mga tanod natin," Joel Dalac, Officer-in-Charge of the Station Operations Divisions Area II of PNR Naga, said.

This marks the second incident in Polangui since the resumption of PNR operations in Albay province.

The local government is taking steps to address the issue.

"Yung sa local government po, nakausap ko rin po si Mayor Adrian Salceda. According po sa kanya is magpapatawag po siya ng meeting sa mga barangay officials concerning sa mga area na may dinadaan ng train," Christopher Encisa, Supervisor of the Polangui EMS-QRT, said.
