Nine classrooms in three buildings at Napô Elementary School, Barangay Sapangdaku, Cebu City were razed to the ground in a dawn fire on January 25, 2024.

According to Babylin Palvan, school principal, seven of the classrooms were used for instruction, one as her office, and another one as Information and Communication Technology Laboratory.

The fire affected around 200 pupils from Kindergarten to Grade 3 who are to revert to modular learning while temporary learning centers will be set up.

A short circuit may have caused the fire, Palvan surmised. She also disclosed that most of the classrooms were already old. In fact, a building dated back to 1933.

The concern has already been brought up at the City School Board. However, Palvan said, the contractor stepped back upon learning that the road condition going to the said school poses challenges in transporting construction materials and equipment.
