The City Agriculture Office (CAgrO) of Davao City has started facilitating the assistance to some 200 farmers affected by the recent flooding and landslides in the city.

Based on CAgrO’s initial assessment, the damage to agriculture brought by the calamities has reached more than P3.7 million.

According to the report, a total of 12 hectares of rice fields had been washed out and 24 farmers reported yield losses in Calinan District.

Some 39 farmers in Marilog, Buhangin, and Tugbok also reported that a total of 18.45 hectares of farmland were damaged due to heavy rains and landslides.

Meanwhile, at least 20 hectares of high-value crops owned by 136 farmers were destroyed in Marilog, Tugbok, Buhangin, Bunawan, and Paguibato.

“Although these damages pose no real threat to Davao City’s food security, CAgrO head Edgardo Haspe said the damaged rice fields in Calinan will negatively affect the city’s rice production,” part of the statement posted on Madayaw Davao Facebook reads.

CAgrO Head Edgardo Haspe said teams have already been deployed in the said areas to assist farmers in recovering their losses.

“We will extend support as immediate as we can para gyud ma-restore ang ilang livelihood,” the City Information Office quoted Haspe as saying.
