Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte has called on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. to resign during his speech during the “Hakbang ng Maisug: Leaders Forum” in the city on Sunday, January 28, 2024.
“Mr. President, kung wala kay gugma ug wala kay aspirations sa imong nasud, resign,” Duterte said in front of the estimated 16,000 attendees.
Duterte dared Marcos to give up his post after lambasting the people’s initiative for charter change and the supposed plan of the government to resume the peace talks.
“You are lazy and you lack compassion…All of these things that he is causing is oppressing the people.
The city’s local chief executive said all actions undertaken by the previous administration in terms of peace and security all went in vain.
Gisayunan mo kay wala mo niagi ana,” Duterte said.
The son of former President Rodrigo Duterte also questioned the people’s initiative to change some provisions of the 1987 constitution.
He said the people’s initiative has been used by politicians who want to stay in power.
Mayor Duterte also said Marcos has all the authority to resolve what he called ‘instability’ in government due to discord within the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“You have every opportunity, power and authority what is broken. Kung unsa kinahanglan og repair, pwede mana nimo ayuhon,” Duterte said.
GMA Regional TV One Mindanao is still trying to reach Malacañang for comment.
In a statement released the day after, Duterte's sister, Vice President Sara Duterte, said her brother may be coming "from a place of brotherly love."
She said she has not spoken to the mayor just yet before the release of her statement.
"I can only surmise that Mayor Sebastian Duterte is coming from a place of brotherly love, coupled by the common sentiment that I do not deserve the despicable treatment that I am receiving from some sectors within the circle of the President," she said.
The Vice President said she will continue to draw strength from the trust she receives from the people. "I take heart from the confidence of the people in my ability to work and thrive in a pandemonium."
