A cargo vessel ran aground along the shoreline at the Lugait Port in Misamis Oriental.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the cargo vessel was drifted to the port approximately three meters from the ship’s starboard side.

The PCG said the crew members had already completed lashing all rolling cargoes and was ready to depart when strong winds and big waves battered the vessel.

“The Captain then attempted to maneuver the vessel towards the anchorage area, but was too late to react,” the PCG report said.

The PCG has coordinated with a tugboat towing company for assistance. It also coordinated with the shipping company to unload the rolling cargos before underwater hull survery was conducted.

The Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Force-Northern Mindanao also assessed the incident and will deploy a spill boom as a preventive measure against potential oil spill.
