The number of people who died in the landslide in Maco, Davao de Oro  is now at 27, based on latest data released by the provincial government on February 9, 2024, three days after the disaster.

In the province’s 6 p.m. situational report, 89 remained missing and 32 have been rescued. All those rescued were injured.

The updated number of individuals missing is reportedly based on the names entered into the police blotter and the list from Barangay Masara where the landslide hit.

“Base sa inisyal nga report (names for validation) gikan sa MDRRMO Maco, as of 6:00 PM karong adlawa (February 9, 2024), aduna na kitay natala nga baynte syete (27) ka na recover nga patayng lawas sa nahitabong landslide ug trayntay dos (32) ka injured ang na rescue. She was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The girl was rescued almost three days after the landslide covered houses and two buses ferrying home workers of a mining company.

The province called on residents to continue praying for those affected by the tragedy.

“Amping kita sa kanunay Dabawenyos ug padayun kitang mag ampo sa mga apektadong katawhan sa nahitabong insidente,” it said.

Up to 1,166 families have been evacuated and are taking shelter in four schools.

Earlier, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) expressed hope and optimism more will surface from the rubble alive.

“We are hopeful for that, hoping that there are still a lot of individuals na survivors, no, so we are just praying to God na meron pang maraming buhay,” said PDRRMO head Joseph Randy Loy.
