Two separate earthquakes, almost two hours apart, rocked Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
The first tremor was reported initially to be magnitude 5.9 at 11:21 a.m., but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) downgraded it later to magnitude 5.8.
PHIVOLCS also said that instead of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, the epicenter was in Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte and has a depth of 30 kilometers.
Intensity IV was felt in San Fernando and Talakag in Bukidnon; Cagayan de Oro City; and Digos City, Davao del Sur.
Intensity III was experienced in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.
Davao City; Banisilian and Kidapawan City in Cotabato; and Alabel and Malungon in Sarangani felt intensity II, while intensity I was experienced in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; M’lang, Cotabato; and Tampakan and Tupi in South Cotabato.
Reported intensities were recorded in the following areas:
- Intensity V - Las Nieves, Agusan del Norte
- Intensity IV - Libona and San Fernando, Bukidnon; Iligan City; Gingoog City;
- Jasaan, Magsaysay, and Medina, Misamis Oriental; City of Bayugan, Prosperidad, and Talacogon, Agusan del Sur
- Intensity III - Jagna, Bohol; Baungon, Cabanglasan, Impasug-ong, Kitaotao,
- City of Malaybalay, Malitbog, Manolo Fortich, Maramag, Quezon, Talakag, and
- City of Valencia, Bukidnon; City of El Salvador, Misamis Oriental; Mawab and
- Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; City of Digos, Davao del Sur; City of Davao; Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur
- Intensity II - Inabanga, and Loboc, Bohol; Don Carlos and Kalilangan, Bukidnon; Catarman,
- Guinsiliban, Mahinog, Mambajao, and Sagay, Camiguin; Matanao, Davao del Sur; Banisilan,
- City of Kidapawan, Makilala, and Tulunan, Cotabato
- Intensity I - Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Arakan and Kabacan, Cotabato; City of Marawi, Lanao del Sur
Meanwhile, the second earthquake hit Esperanza, Agusan del Sur at 1:21 p.m. From magnitude 5.5, Phivolcs also downgraded it to magnitude 5.2 and has a depth of 45 kilometers.
Intensity III was felt in Libona and San Fernando in Bukidnon; and Cagayan de Oro.
Intensity II was experienced in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, while intensity I was felt in Digos City, Davao del Sur; Banisilian, Cotabato; and Alabel and Malungon in Sarangani.
Reported intensities were recoded in the following areas:
- Intensity V - Esperanza, Agusan del Sur
- Intensity II - Cagayan de Oro; Magsaysay, City Gingoog, and Medina, Misamis Oriental
- Intensity I - City of Marawi, Lanao del Sur
The Phivolcs said both earthquakes were tectonic in origin.
At 5:08 p.m. on the same day, a magnitude 2.5 quake with a depth of 011 km hit Agusan del Sur. Its location was at 08.10°N, 125.96°E - 003 km N 07° E of Veruela.
