Just as the corn harvesting season begins, farmers in Barangay Songkoy, Calasiao, Pangasinan are facing a problem of pest infestation in their corn crops.
Growing corn spans four months.
Bernard Sales, one of the farmers affected, invested P150,000 in cultivating his one-hectare cornfield.
Unfortunately, his crop also fell victim to the pests.
"Ayan ang problema naming magsasaka ng mais. Sana pansinin din kami," Sales said.
Farmers said income from the crops would have sustained their basic needs.
"Makakatulong sana ito para makabili ng pagkain," Sales added.
The Municipal Agriculture Office has started assessing the extent of damage to provide assistance to the farmers affected.
"Kapag dumating ang request namin [na pesticide], binibigay namin sa mga nag-complain at nagre-report," Mel Francisco, Corn Coordinator at the Calasiao Municipal Agriculture Office, said.
Farmers are encouraged to report any concern directly to the Municipal Agriculture Office.
