A graduating student died after he saved his cousin from drowning at sea in Pasacao, Camarines Sur.

Nico Paraan, 18, drowned after he was carried away by current to the deeper part of the sea after he saved his cousin.

He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

"Nag-rescue ini si biktima ta si Nico, siya ang minalas na napaduman mas lalo sa parteng mas hararom na parte kan dagat kaya siya nalamos. Base sa background man, dae ini tatao maglangoy," PMAJ. Allan Lopez, Officer in Charge of the Pasacao MPS, said.

The two men were supposed to go to Naga City but decided to drop by the beach for a dip.

The Philippine Coast Guard said it was dangerous to engage in water activities at that time because of the bad weather and high tide.

"Delikado rin yun kasi kung malakas ang hangin at andyan ka lang sa dalampasigan, natatangay tayo sa malalim [ng] 'di natin namamalayan, so delikado din yun," CG CPO Emerson Libreja, Commander of CGSS Pasacao, said.

This is the first drowning incident in Pasacao in 2024.

Authorities reminded beachgoers to prioritize safety by not going into the water without supervision, and by wearing life vests when necessary.
