The landslide that buried people and structures in Maco, Davao de Oro, also disrupted the education of at least 4,323 students, the Department of Education (DepEd)-Davao de Oro said.

Of this number, 4,097 are from public schools and 236 are from a private school.

These schools are Elizalde Elementary School, Panibasan Elementary School, Elizalde National High School, Panibasan National High School, Masara Integrated School, Tagbaros Elementary School, and Masara Christian School Inc.

On the other hand, the total number of teaching and non-teaching personnel affected has reached 182.

Davao de Oro Schools Division Superintendent Cristy Epe said the DepEd-Davao de Oro has implemented a program called “Tuloy Kaalaman”, which aims to continue the learning of students.

“Since the learners of these schools are evacuated naa gyuy interruption sa learning but we are trying to address this by having this program called ‘Tuloy Kaalaman’ so we shifted our strategy by concentrating on essential competencies so these are reading, math, and science that need to be prioritized in between the other subject areas would come in like MAPEH and TLE to break also the monotony of instruction,” Epe said.

Epe added that another challenge learners are facing is trauma.

She said psychosocial interventions have already been conducted by guidance counselors and other professionals at the evacuation centers.

As of February 15, 2024, the total dead bodies retrieved from the landslide site reached 90 while 37 individuals are still missing, according to the Management of the Dead and the Missing Unit.
