Thirteen workers of a garments factory at Mactan Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) 1 sought assistance from the Public Employment Services Office (PESO) of Lapu-Lapu City after alleged illegal dismissal.
The workers alleged that the company failed to notify them on the reason behind the dismissal, whether it was because of retrenchment or of redundancy.
The troubled workers said that after an inspection made by the Department of Labor and Employment, they were asked purportedly the company to file a resignation letter. When they inquired on whether they could still report to work should they refuse to file the letter, they were told in the negative which they said baffled them even more.
Kim Francisco, Lapu-Lapu City PESO manager, disclosed that the management of the garments factory has already responded to a meeting set at the PESO office on February 26, 2024 to shed light on the complaints raised by affected by MEPZ 1 employees.
