Three more barangays were created in Marawi City following simultaneous plebiscites on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

These distinct and independent barangays are Sultan Corobong, Sultan Panoroganan, and Angoyao.

The voting opened at 7 a.m. and closed at 3 p.m. with eight clustered precincts and three voting centers in the participating barangays of Dulay, Kilala, and Patan.

Sultan Corobong was created from Barangay Dulay Proper; Sultan Panoroganan was created from Barangay Kilala; and Angoyao was created from Barangay Patan.

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) said 2,123 of the 2,265 registered voters cast their votes.

Of the 2,123 voters, 2,121 voted 'yes' while two voted against the move.

The poll body extended its gratitude to the military, police, local government unit, and other partner agencies for the successful, secure, and peaceful conduct of the plebiscites.

“Once more, the successful conduct of these plebiscites attest to the commitment of the COMELEC to faithfully perform its mandate of ensuring that the people’s voices are heard in every electoral exercise, be it local or national in scale,” the COMELEC said.

“Most notably, the historic high voter turnout and the resounding YES votes clearly show that democracy is not merely alive but vibrant and thriving in the Islamic City of Marawi,” the poll body added.

The COMELEC said the plebiscites were conducted based on the ordinance approved and submitted by the city government, which seeks to divide the three participating barangays due to growing population.

With the creation of new barangays, the delivery of government services will be more accessible and prompt, the poll body added.

From 98, the city now has 101 barangays. The local government will also review the designation of officials for the three new barangays.
