An active transport infrastructure pegged at P247.5 million opened in the Municipality of Cordova on March 11, 2024 at around 9 a.m.

The said infrastructure has a total of 138 bike racks and five repair stations.

The cycling facilities are now in 23 points in Metropolitan Cebu, including Cordova being the latest.

Formal opening took place during an inauguration ceremony at the Centennial Road in Cordova, the fifth local government unit in Metro Cebu with a bike lane.

The bike lane’s expansion works stretch 67.18 kilometers which now reaches 124.69 kilometers constructed, maintained, and upgraded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

According to DPWH, the cycling facilities are expected to gain the confidence of biking enthusiasts especially the newbies.

It is a common observation that use of bike lanes has not fully rolled on as lane markings are the only features implemented initially, and such do not include yet the physical separators to protect bikers from motorists.

Biking enthusiasts graced the event to demonstrate their appreciation to the completion of the project.

It is a goal of the project to develop an active transport to encourage healthier lifestyle and further reduction of carbon footprints.

Bike lanes in the highly urbanized cities of Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu City, as well as in the component city of Talisay in Cebu Province, started in 2021, but completion took place only in February of 2024 which includes the expansion works in Cordova town.
