Several commuters in Pangasinan have raised concerns about the alleged overloading in modernized jeepneys, particularly those servicing the Bayambang-Dagupan route.

A video captured by a commuter showed cramped conditions inside a modernized jeepney.

The commuter declined an on-cam interview but disclosed that the modernized jeepneys have reportedly been overloading.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has also received complaints on the matter.

The agency said it will address the matter with its "Oplan Ligtas Biyahe" operation leading to the Holy Week.

"Mayroon kaming mga oplan. May kanya-kanyang assignment," Atty. Anabel Nullar, Acting Director of LTFRB-1, said.

As part of the operation, authorities will monitor and penalize vehicles exceeding their passenger capacity.

The goal is to ensure the safety and comfort of commuters during the busy travel season.

In a parallel effort, the Public Order and Safety Office in Calasiao, Pangasinan, is taking strict action against tricycle drivers who engage in overloading.

Tricycles are only allowed to carry up to five passengers, and violating drivers risk losing their permits.

"Kapag overloading sila, ti-ticket-an namin [dahil] violation ‘yan. Kawawa ang mga bata; baka may malaglag. Dapat walang overloading at tama lang ang sakay nila," Junel Diaz, Calasiao Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) Chief, said.

Some parents are choosing to accompany their children personally to ensure their safety on the road.

"Kasi doon pa lang sa pag-drive, once na hindi mo namalayan na mahuhulog ang estudyante. Imbes na hindi [na kami] makaabala, ‘yan ang iniiwasan talaga [ang maaksidente]," Nelson Orbe, a resident, said.
