Four soldiers were killed in an ambush in Datu Hoffer, Maguindanao del Sur.
The fatalities include a solider with a private first class rank, two with rank of corporal, and two with rank of private.
Major General Alex Rillera, commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central (6ID/JTFC), said the alleged ambush happened near a residential area in Barangay Tuayan as the soldiers were on their way back to base from buying food supplies for the “iftar” (meals served after a day of fasting during Ramadan) morning on Sunday, March 17, 2024.
It has been the troop’s practice to serve “iftar” meals during the holy month of Ramadan to muslim communities under its jurisdiction.
During the alleged ambush, the soldiers were riding a civilian vehicle.
The Philippine Army and JTFC condemned the incident they described as ‘cowardly and inhuman act’ against the troops during the observance of Ramadan and the approaching Holy Week.
“Kinokondena natin sa pinakamataas na antas ang brutal na pagpatay sa ating tropa”, Rillera said.
Philippine Army Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, said the Philippine Army denounced the ruthless ambush of the troops by armed men believed to be members of the Dawlah Islamiya (DI)- Hassan Group.
“We are working closely with local authorities and community leaders to ensure that security measures in the area are sustained. This incident only strengthens our resolve to eradicate this terrorist group from our land once and for all,” Galido said.
“The Philippine Army condemned the senseless, treacherous, and most heinous acts perpetrated by this terrorist group. The Army is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators face the full consequences of their actions and that justice will be serve for the victims and their families,” he added.
Galido also said appropriate benefits and assistance will be provided to the families of the fallen soldiers.
