A heat index of 47.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Catanduanes on March 16, 2024, marking the highest heat index recorded this year.

According to Juan Pantion Jr., Chief Meteorological Officer of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Catanduanes, this is caused by the combination of the northeast monsoon and easterlies.

Pantion warned that temperatures could rise further from March to May, during the dry season combined with the effects of El Niño.

He advised the public to always take precautions against the heat.

Cold treats like halo-halo and mineral water are currently in high demand in Catanduanes.

Junilove Jasareno, a halo-halo vendor, reported a surge in customers, with around 12 customers in the morning alone. His halo-halo sales have surpassed those of burgers, according to Jasareno.

Similarly, Marilyn Balalaque, a mineral water vendor, stated that she can dispose of one and a half cases due to the hot weather. She said bus passengers are among her customers at present.
