Mountain barangays of Cebu City are placed under a state of calamity because of the ill effects of the El Niño phenomenon.

The Cebu City Council made the declaration during a special session on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

The city is set to “utilize its quick response fund for necessary expenditures to mitigate the impact of El Niño.”

Councilor Joel Garganera authored the resolution and was approved by the City Council.

In a post by the Cebu City Public Information Office, it pointed out that the approval is based on a recommendation of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council dated March 18, 2024.

Data from the City Agriculture Department cited that “50 percent of production areas in upland barangays of Cebu City have shown presence of soil cracks due to lack of water and have already affected 506 farmers and 115 hectares of agricultural production areas.”
