At least three people died in separate drowning incidents in Cagayan Valley on Good Friday, March 29, 2024, according to the Cagayan Provincial Information Office.
One minor also almost drowned.
In Barangay Simpatuyu, Sta. Teresita, a nine-year-old child died after he drowned at a river where he was swimming with six friends.
The child reportedly swam to the deeper part of the river unnoticed by his companions.
Despite immediate call for help, authorities reportedly did not reach the river immediately because it is at a remote location.
The child was rushed to the hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, in Barangay Diora-Zinungan, Sta. Ana, a 35-year-old man drowned at a beach resort.
Based on investigation by the Sta. Ana Police, the victim was drinking with his friends when he decided to take a swim.
Later, his friend noticed he was struggling in the water so the latter dove in and pulled the victim out.
The victim was rushed to the Sta. Ana Community Hospital but he was also declared dead on arrival.
It was later found that the victim did not know how to swim.
In Barangay Amunitan, Gonzaga, a 50-year-old woman also drowned at sea. She was a resident of Barangay Baybayug, Alcala.
According to the Gonzaga PNP, the victim went to a resort in Barangay Amunitan with her relatives and decided to swim.
It was only after a while when her family noticed she had gone missing. After a few hours, they found her receiving CPR on the beach.
She was immediately rushed by Rescue 1025 to the Alfonso Ponce Enrile Memorial District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, a four-year-old child was rescued from drowning at the Magat River in Barangay Lalog, Luna, Isabela.
According to reports, the family of the child did not notice that the child had waded into the river.
After a few moments, the child was seen struggling in the river.
Personnel of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO)-Luna, Barangay officials of San Isidro, and the police rescued the child successfully.
The child was taken to the hospital for initial treatment.
Authorities urge caution and vigilance among parents, especially when their children are near around bodies of water.
