After Iloilo City suspended face-to-face classes in preschool to senior high school, both public and private, from April 1 to 2, 2024 because of the scorching hot weather, four other local government units in Western Visayas have followed suit.
Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez directed pre-school, elementary, secondary and senior high levels to once again adopt alternative delivery modes for instructional methods to benefit students.
“However, private schools with air-conditioned rooms and tertiary-level institutions may exercise their discretion to continue with face-to-face classes,” Benitez said in a post.
Roxas City Mayor Ronnie Dadivas also ordered a class suspension on April 1, 2024 from preschool to senior high school.
However, suspension of classes in college institutions is with the discretion of management.
"Sa mga college students, ang desisyon sa suspensyon sang klase yara sa diskresyon sang pamunuan sang kada kolehiyo kag unibersidad," the mayor said.
In Kabankalan City, Mayor Benjie Miranda announced during the flag ceremony on April 1, 2024 that he issued Executive Order 2024-012 suspending classes both in private and public schools due to a high heat index that state weather bureau Pagasa has forecast.
Heat index on April 1, 2024 is forecast at 41 degrees Celsius, while 42 degrees Celsius is expected on April 2, 2024.
Mayor Miranda said it is important to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and faculty members during extreme weather conditions.
City government employees have the option not to wear their uniforms for the week as a measure to stay comfortable in the heat, the mayor also ordered.
Further, in-person classes are also suspended in E.B. Magalona town, Negros Occidental in all levels, public and private until April 2, 2024.
