A netizen captured on video another fish stranding in Cebu, this time at the port of Olango Island off Lapu-Lapu City.
The netizen was identified through his social media account handle “Roland Tisoy" who works as a security guard at the Santa Rosa Port in Olango Island.
According to Roland, the incident happened on April 1, 2024 at past 1 p.m.
He said he was on his routine roving task at that time when he saw boatmen of a passenger boat anchored at the port picking up in a frenzy a number of fish squirming on the pavement. Roland said he himself saw varieties of Sardinella, locally called "tamban" or "lupoy," jumping out of the water.
As to the authenticity of the video, Roland said that no orchestration was done to set the fish on the port for the sake of video log (vlog) content.
GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak had the video reviewed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) 7.
According to Johann Tejada, technical assistant at the BFAR 7 Office of the Regional Director, just like previous fish strandings in Central Visayas there are a number of factors leading to such ecological event.
It is also possible the supply of fish is abundant because of a three-month closed fishing season at the Visayan Sea, Tejada said.
The moratorium on commercial fishing started in November 15, 2023 to February 15, 2024.
To recall, another netizen by the name of Maria Jaycor Ochea took a video of a thick school of fish on a stranding at the port of Barangay Tingo, also in Olango island, on February 18, 2024.
