The local government of Samal Island is establishing a renewable energy source to ease the power problem in the city.

Officials have already broken ground for the 466.2KW Renewable Energy Project behind the new City Hall, which can generate 1,863KW daily.

Once the P50 million project is finished, it will serve as primary source of energy at the City Hall while the excess power could be utilized to alleviate the power demand of the city.

The solar energy project, which measures 2,500 square meters, can also serve as shaded car parks. The project is set to be completed within five months.

Aside from the project, the local government had already purchased three generator sets that could supply electricity to residents while waiting for the completion of the submarine cable of the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative Inc. (NORDECO).

Mayor Al David Uy said the local government has limited power to replace the electric utility in the city.

“The long-term solution is to review, to amend, or to revoke the franchise and kana wala na na sa among mga kamot. Naa na na sa Congress and finally sa President,” Uy said.

The city’s local chief executive also has a message for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“Before you travel, I know you travel a lot, please look at your own backyard, Mr. President,” Uy added.
