Shellfish collected and tested from San Pedro Bay in Basey town, Province of Samar and from Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar (particularly in the towns of General MacArthur, Quinapondan, Hernani, and Salcedo) remain positive for paralytic shellfish poison or toxic red tide beyond the regulatory limit.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Eastern Visayas issued Shellfish Bulletin No. 07 to warn the public from consuming shellfish collected from the areas mentioned.

All types of shellfish and “alamang” or krill gathered from these areas are not safe for human consumption, BFAR 8 said.

“Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs from the above-mentioned bays are safe for human consumption, provided that they are fresh, thoroughly washed, and have had their internal organs, such as gills and intestines, removed before cooking,” the advisory dated April 12, 2024 reads.

On the other hand, the Local Red Tide Warning previously placed in the coastal waters of Biliran Island was already lifted.

“All types of shellfish and “alamang” (Acetes sp.) also called locally as “hipon” from the said area [Biliran] are now safe for human consumption,” the advisory added.
