The town of Surallah in South Cotabato has been placed under a state of calamity due to the effects of El Niño.

The declaration is based on a resolution passed by the Sangguniang Bayan.

According to the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist, the damage to agriculture and fisheries due to the dry spell has reached nearly P72 million as of March 31, 2024.

Some 1,178 farmers have already been affected.

Nine barangays in the town have already declared a state of calamity, including Buenavista, Canahay, Centrala, Dahay, Duengas, Lamion, Little Baguio, Talahik, and Upper Sepaka.

“Whereas, the August Body finds it fitting and proper to declare the Municipality of Surallah under the State of Calamity due to El Niño (Dry Spell) Phenomenon,” the resolution reads.
