A man barely escaped harm after his tricycle was hit by a train when he attempted to cross the train tracks in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Iriga City, Camarines Sur.
The train was going to Legazpi City from Naga City.
The tricycle driver, a worker at the city slaughterhouse, reportedly did not see the train approaching as he attempted to cross the tracks.
Residents said they actually heard the train's horn but the tricycle driver still continued. One of the residents, who almost lost a finger, even tried to warn the tricycle driver while attempting to pull the tricycle away from the tracks.
“Su naga antabay kayang saro, [an sabi] dae na daa kuno magdiretso, kaya lang dae man nadangog [su driver] dineretso,” Anggay, a resident, said.
Authorities said there was no crossing keeper during the incident. A crossing keeper stops vehicles from crossing the tracks when a train is approaching.
The barangay said that the Philippine National Railways (PNR) should also take on the responsibility of managing the railroad crossing.
“Dapat mag [laag] man sinda [ang PNR] dyan na magbantay dyan, bako lang kami,” Josefina Comla Peñones, the Barangay Captain of Sta. Cruz, said.
This is the third incident in which a vehicle was hit by a PNR train in the Bicol region since April 2024.
The PNR is yet to release a statement regarding the incidents.
