Seven people were injured when lightning struck and hit them while they were attending a wedding reception in Barangay Salaysay, Marilog District, Davao City.

Six of them, including two minors, were taken to the hospital on board an ambulance and rescue vehicle while the other man opted to stay.

“Oh, kit-an gyud namo, siga gyud sya nga murag kalayo. Tumba gyud, unya gahi na ang uban unya di na kalihok gyud,” a witness, Neneng Ombat, said.

“Ulan gyud to siya, hinay ragud nga ulan, gamay ra nga ulan unya mura gyud og bomba gyud, nakuyawan jud mi,” Ombat added.

The lightning reportedly struck a coconut tree first before it hit the seven wedding guests.

Those who were rushed to the hospital are now in stable condition and set to be discharged, as of this writing.

According to the barangay, it was the second time that lightning struck the community. Two people died and one survived when lightning hit the barangay in 2023.

“Katong niaging tuig, mao toy first time nga naay naigo og kilat diri. On the spot gyud to, duha ang namatay, isa nabuhi,” Barangay Chairman Roberto Itdang said.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the public should be wary when there is a thunderstorm.

“Kung naa ta sa gawas, kung naa’y mga thunderstorms, labi na kung overhead, mosulod gyud ta sa balay. You stop labi na kung maggamit og cellphone or mga electrical appliances,” PAGASA-Davao Chief Meteorological Officer, Engineer Lolita Vinalay, said.
