Authorities have arrested five individuals for alleged illegal hunting of large flying foxes in Barangay Wines, Baguio District, Davao City.

Members of the DENR-CENRO Davao and the Philippine National Police Maritime Group launched an operation after receiving a tip from an informant about the illegal activities in Barangays Wines and Gumalang.

The suspects were allegedly caught in the act of hunting and possessing large flying foxes.

Recovered wildlife were brought to the DENR-CENRO Davao for custody while the arrested individuals will face charges for violation of the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act (RA 9147), the law that prohibits the hunting and possession of wildlife without a permit.

“The swift action of the joint operatives underscored the government's commitment to enforcing environmental laws and safeguarding the country's rich biodiversity. The Large Flying Fox, known for its significant role in seed dispersal and pollination, is vital to maintaining ecological balance,” the DENR-Davao said.

Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that threaten wildlife to ensure that biodiversity and wildlife species are protected and preserved.
